The Public Works department is responsible for maintaining the overall look and feel of the Borough throughout the year. They are responsible for recycling, brush collection, leaf collection, sewer collection systems, tree maintenance, grass cutting, grass clippings, cold street repair, hot street repair, line painting, snow removal, street sign maintenance, storm water management, Christmas decorations, street sweeping and assisting other departments as needed.
Can I mix plastics with bottles and cans?
Yes, and you can crush your plastics (#1 and #2 only) to maximize space. you don't have to rinse the containers but rinsing cuts down on odor.
Who should I call if my trash hasn't been picked up?
The South Jersey Sanitation Department customer service number is 1-888-772-9899.
What goes in the large recycling buckets?
Glass, cans and #1 and #2 plastics only.
When and how do I put out grass clippings?
On Mondays, April through Columbus Day (October), place clippings in an open container not to exceed 60 pounds. Do not mix with trash and remove all dirt. Place grass clipping cans at least 10 feet from household trash cans. When cans are mixed together, it causes both the trash contractor and the Department of Public Works to miss cans.
When and how do I put out tree limbs and branches?
Only on your brush day, tie and bundle not to exceed four feet in length or 60 pounds in weight. Do not put out until the night before your recycling day.
How and when do I put cardboard boxes out?
Boxes must be broken down. They go out on your recycling day only. Sorry, but the recycling trucks cannot accommodate large boxes which have not been broken down and bundled. Remove all packing material.
Can I mix mail and other papers with newspapers?
Yes, either tie in a bundle or put in a paper bag on your recycling day. Make sure to recycle all your paper, except what has come into contact with food. For example, no pizza boxes, ice cream cartons or cardboard beverage containers.
How do I know what plastics are recyclable?
The easiest way to sort your plastics is to look on the bottom of the container. Anything with a #1 or #2 on the bottom is recyclable. All other plastics go in the trash. Plastic bags are not yet recyclable but many grocery stores have bag recycling programs.
When do I put out sofas, televisions, chairs, etc.?
These items are put out on regular trash day.
What do I do with bicycles, refrigerators, air conditioners, dishwashers, hot water heaters and pieces of metal?
Simply place them curbside on white goods day. Refrigerator doors must be removed.
The recycling truck just took my recycling, but left my yard waste. Why?
Yard waste is picked up by a separate truck.
Why hasn't my street been plowed?
Completing a route from start to finish takes time, and it is simply not possible to plow every street at the same time. In cases in which the duration of the storm is lengthy, it is likely that the route had been plowed and has since been covered with additional snow. Be assured that all streets are plowed as quickly as possible.
Why did you plow my car and/or driveway in?
The plows must push the snow to the side in order to clear the street. It is not possible to avoid plowing snow into driveways and/or cars that are parked on the street.
What are white goods?
White goods consist of all metal items and appliances. Please remove concrete from metal posts. Chain link fences and propane tanks are NOT white goods.

Leaf Collection Guidelines
The regularly scheduled Borough collection of leaves begins during the 4th week of October. In October, Public Works will attempt to make a pass through the entire town. During November and December, every street has signs posted when leaf collection will take place. Residents must comply with the following guidelines to ensure pickup of their leaves:
It is always difficult to collect the leaves at the right time and get everything completed before snow season (when we need the same trucks ready with snow plow attachments). Rain will slow down the process. We try our best, but ask for your understanding and help.
When leaves are placed in the street, it creates obstructions such as:
Note: The Borough provides all households with a Borough Calendar. Keep this handy. All collection schedules, as well as all Borough meeting dates and events are listed
Snow Removal Guidelines
The Haddon Heights Public Works Department is working hard to make driving safer and easier in snowy weather. Depending on the duration and amount of snowfall, Borough trucks may plow your street several times. As snow rolls off our plows, it sometimes accumulates in driveway aprons. Please understand that this is unavoidable and it is the homeowner's responsibility to clear it. Here are some helpful hints to make "snow business" less frustrating:
Snow Related Ordinances
400-8: Removal of snow, grass and weeds.
The owner or owners, tenant or tenants of lands abutting or bordering upon the sidewalks and gutters of public streets, avenues and highways shall remove all snow from the same within 12 hours of daylight after the same shall fall thereon, and all grass, weeds and other impediments therefrom within three days after notice to remove the same.
400-9: Removal of ice.
The owner or owners, tenant or tenants of lands abutting or bordering upon the sidewalks of public streets, avenues and highways shall remove all ice from the same within 12 hours of daylight after the ice shall have formed thereon, or if it shall be impossible within that time to remove the same, the owner or owners, tenant or tenants shall spread over the ice on said sidewalks ashes, sawdust or some other similar material which shall make the said sidewalks safe for the use of pedestrians.
400-10: Removal by Borough; lien for costs. (Amended 2-25-1975 by Ord. No. 485)
Where the owner or owners, tenant or tenants shall refuse or neglect to remove such snow, ice, grass, weeds or other impediments in the manner and within the time herein provided, the same may be removed by or under the direction of the Superintendent of Public Works or any other officer of the Borough who may be designated by the Mayor for that purpose. In such cases, such officer shall certify the cost of the removal of such snow, ice, grass, weeds or other impediments to the Borough Council, which shall examine the certificate and, if found correct, shall cause the cost as shown thereon to be charged against the lands abutting or bordering such sidewalk or gutter; the amount so charged shall forthwith become a lien upon such land and shall be added to and become and form part of the taxes next to be assessed and levied upon such lands, the same to bear interest at the same rate as taxes and to be collected and enforced by the same officers and in the same manner as taxes.

Trash & Recycling Guidelines (Schedule follows)
In Haddon Heights, we pride ourselves on keeping the neighborhoods beautiful. Please help our community stay clean on trash collection day, recycling day and throughout the week.
Trash and recycling materials should be placed on the curb between 4 p.m. the night before collection and 6 a.m. on collection day. Please respect your neighbors by removing empty containers that day. If you are on vacation, have a neighbor place and remove containers at the appropriate times so your house looks occupied.
If you need to replace your recycling bucket, you can pick one up from the Public Works Complex. These are limited to 1 per household.
Dumping of yard debris and trash on highways, green acres, basins or open spaces is not permitted by anyone.
