Parks

Did you know that the Borough of Haddon Heights has over 67 acres of park and recreational areas within its borders? This represents 6.6% of the total area of our town and gives us more park and recreation space than most towns in our area. Come explore our leafy environment just outside your front door.

Here are the Borough’s Parks and Recreational zones and plans:

Devon Avenue Zone: This area of 19.3 acres contains athletic fields, tennis courts, parking, wooded area and open space. On the south side of Devon Avenue there are fields that support soccer, field hockey, flag football, town events and casual use. Recent clearing, grading and resurfacing with crushed stone added 40 new parking spaces bringing the total to 100. Haddon Glen Swim Club sits on the southern boundary while the east side of the zone is a 4 acre wooded park featuring the Little Timber Creek Nature Trail. On the North side of Devon Avenue are 5 tennis courts and a large area of wooded and open land which is currently undergoing environmental review for possible reclamation. We have an engineering proposal in hand to resurface the tennis courts and funding is under review. Our latest project on this side of Devon Ave is the conversion of the former skate park site into a basketball court with a target opening in mid July.

Barr Complex Zone: Our most centrally located zone, this diverse 17.4 acre site supports a wide variety of use featuring quiet park land and shady woods, 6 different diamonds, multiple use outfields, Hoff’s beloved playground and picnic area, and small buildings housing concessions, rest rooms and storage. A town icon, the former Boy Scout cabin, holds center spot in this zone and has a large meeting room, a rest room and a kitchenette.

The Borough has planned a host of projects that have been or will soon be completed including removal of dead trees and trimming of dangerous ones, fence repair, shed painting, backstop replacement, monthly safety checks of the playground, mulching under the play equipment and a massive cleanup of the woods. New features include the clearing of an enhanced nature trail/ walking path (using wood chips harvested from the tree project), the planting of willow trees and the addition of 30 parking spaces near the Cabin.

In addition, this zone will see extensive capital enhancements over the next few months. First up is the use of grant money and volunteer labor to refurbish the “Haddon Heights Cabin” with completion expected by mid-July. Projects will upgrade electrical, internal and external cosmetic repairs, adding ADA accessibility, and reconstructing the rest room and kitchen areas. Picnic benches will also be placed outside of the cabin along with lighting.

Haddon Lake Park Zone: The County owns and maintains this 30 acre park which holds a walking trail, woods, playground, baseball field and the Norcross-McLaughlin Dell. The Camden County Park Systems maintains the park, equipment and facilities, and a project to eliminate flooding between the playground and Kings Highway was completed in 2008. Haddon Lake Park extends from Station Avenue at 10th to Kings Highway. While the turn of the century lake was drained decades ago, this natural bowl area contains a walking /jogging path and grassy areas along the creek, the Norcross Dell for shows, a playground,a baseball field and quiet areas for relaxing.
