In the late 1970's, Rosemary McDevitt and Anita Prettelt met in college at Rowan University (formerly Glassboro State), where they studied under Dr. Yoheved Kaplinsky.  (Dr. Kaplinsky is the current Artistic Director and Piano Chair of The Julliard School in New York, where she has been a faculty member since 1993, chair of the piano department since 1997, Susan W. Rose chair since 2000, and artistic director since 2007).

Rosemary and Anita received their Bachelor of Arts degree in music education and piano performance.  They became good friends during their Rowan University years, and continued in their own musical pursuits after graduation.  The years following college led both of these talented women to begin families, while still teaching locally and spreading their passion for music within their communities.  These changes led the two down different roads, although they still kept in touch from time to time.  Many years later and around the same time, both Rosemary and Anita lost their husbands to brain cancer.  This forced them into the challenging life of being single mothers and having to provide for their families in a way they never expected.

Long days of faithful hard work sustained both families during the following years.  However, despite their hard work, both families were struggling financially.  By chance in September 2009, Rosemary and Anita happen to see each other while shopping in a local grocery store.  As they shared their journeys with each other, they were amazed to learn of the common challenges they both faced.  This reunion led to the partnership and establishment of what has become the Haddon Piano School.
